Glossary
A glossary to help with jargon and acronyms used in radio communications, satellite communications and cybersecurity.
B
BLOS
Beyond Line of Sight is a term used to describe radio communications capabilities that link personnel or systems that are either too distant or too obscured by terrain for LOS (Line of Sight) communications.
Traditionally, these radios utilised active repeaters or groundwave propagation. With SlingShot, they can use commercial satellites to extend communication ranges from a few miles to a few thousand miles.
C
COTM
Communications On The Move is a term used to describe mobile communications capability, particularly in military applications, with regard to BLOS communications.
The basic principle of BLOS COTM is that equipment is fitted with an antenna that can establish satellite communication without the need to stop or pause. TACSAT, for example, uses UHF satellite links for BLOS but the operator must pause to locate the satellite.
COMSEC
Communications security is the discipline of preventing unauthorised interceptors from accessing telecommunications in an intelligible form, while still delivering content to the intended recipients.
The field includes cryptographic security, transmission security, emissions security and physical security of COMSEC equipment and associated keying material.
COMSEC is used to protect both classified and unclassified traffic on military communications networks, including voice, video, and data. It is used for both analogue and digital applications, and both wired and wireless links.
L
L-TAC
L-TAC is Inmarsat’s global L-band satellite service that provides customers with dedicated, non-contended, 25 kHz channels. L-TAC, in combination with SlingShot, is a complementary, true and effective COMSATCOM alternative to military SATCOM (TACSAT), but delivers Beyond Line of Sight Communications on the Move using in-service UHF and VHF tactical radios.
S
SATCOM
Satellite communications is the use of satellite technology in the field of communications. SATCOM provides communication over long distances and can operate under circumstances or conditions which are inoperable for other forms of communication. It does not need terrestrial infrastructure for operation. SATCOM voice communications still require standard radio discipline procedures.
Slingshot
A unique Command and Control Communications (C3) system
SlingShot enables users of UHF and VHF tactical radios to use commercial satellites, to extend range over 1000s of miles.
A winner of the Queen’s Award For Enterprise: Innovation, SlingShot is in operation across four continents in a variety of scenarios, with users ranging from Special Forces to Emergency Responders.
